Roland Argarian dreams of adventure and daring deeds but instead finds himself as the the town's rat catcher and vermin exterminator. He feels something ever time he kills a rat or snake but he has no idea what it means. When he is attacked inside the village inn by an assassin, he displays an ability to use magic that he didn't know he had. Saved by the Syltexi bouncer Oryon, Roland and his friend Destyn are dragged from their homes on an adventure that will cover all of Eltash...and threaten the entire Broadlands.
Rayk Fallheim is a Vigilant Captain of the Imperial First Guard and a member of the Council of Nine. He struggles with both his duty to an incompetent king and his membership on an ineffectual council. When the Tamraani ambassador Kyera al-Krovaa brings warnings of a plot against the empire, Rayk must race against time to save both the throne and the Broadlands from invasion.
