Shadow on the Wall

Welcome to the Broadlands

There is only one magic, and that is the magic of life.
 - Dolan the Wise

Black Background

How does one explain the Lifemagic? It is simple in its mechanics, yet infinitely complicated in its practice. The power to heal the sick and wounded, to shield those in danger, and to conjure illusions is simple enough: a small gesture, words spoken in the correct incantation. These spells are easily performed by those that have the aptitude and knowledge to utilize the Lifemagic. And with the adequate Store of Lifepower to draw upon.

That is the key, the Store. Or rather, how that Store is filled by the mage. You see, the words of Dolan the Wise are not just a flippant tagline on an archway at the Academy. They are meant to inspire the mage, and indeed to hold the mage accountable for the lives they both save and take. Because, you see, a mage is nothing without life. Their power depends on it, flows from it and towards it. A mage's Store is filled with the lives that they take, and it should only be used to better the lives of those around them.

Some may say this is barbaric, killing one to save the life of another. But we mages are forbidden from killing our fellow persons. It is from the animals that we take life, and with their sacrifice, we are able to make the lives of our fellow persons better. Yes, you can gain Lifepower from your fellow persons, but that power is tainted. It is the ultimate power, to be sure, but at what cost? No good has come from an act of such evil. And I know of no mage that would stoop so low.
